About Groundhogs
Groundhogs are also known as woodchuck belongs to a large group of ground squirrels. It is a lowland creature and is found in much through of the eastern United States across Canada and into Alaska as well. 

Appearance
It is the largest sciurid, and adult groundhogs are usually 16 to 20 inches long with 6 inches of tail. They are usually brown and grey blackish and have a squirrel-shaped body. It has completely black eyes and ears are short. The ears do not protrude out of the body rather they are somewhat stuck to the body. The tail is thick and helps them in keeping their balance. Its legs are short and help in keeping faster pace to escape the predator. It has fur on its body which is black and brownish mixed in color. Its color shade varies from red-brown to dark black brown. 

Biology
Groundhogs belong to the species of squirrels, but they are quite large as compared to squirrels. Their weight is usually twenty pounds and somewhere around this figure. They reproduce through the process of mating and their mating season starts in March, and it goes on till the end of April. Young females reproduce during this season. Female can give birth to 2 to 6 young one in a year. They live in their burrows and hibernate after the mating season is over. 

Lifecycle
Groundhogs live in burrows, and their lifespan is of around 9 to 14 years depending upon the conditions. It is important for them to protect themselves from the predators and their burrows help them to hide from the predators. They usually hibernate in the cold season and get out of their burrows when it gets hot. However, if they don't find a place to hide, then they may die due to severe weather conditions.

Habitat
They live in the burrows and stay in there during the cold season. Severe weather conditions may claim their life as they cannot stand extreme weather conditions. They are found in the United States and Canada and far into Alaska as well. They are found in the soft muddy floor.

Diet
They travel in search of food in several places. They usually feed upon wild grasses and other vegetation including berries and crops. They also eat grubs, grasshoppers, insects and other small animals but they are not omnivorous at all. 

Behavior
They do not like to socialize with other groundhogs, and they are quite anti-social. However, during mating season, they start socializing and are quite of fond of getting dominance in a particular region. They are aggressive creatures and quite good at digging burrows for their abode. To escape predators, they climb to nearby trees to save their life.
